APOD: 2022 May 17 - NGC 1316: After Galaxies Collide

Good afternoon, Rallypoint, and welcome to the May 17th Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD): "NGC 1316: After Galaxies Collide." Also known as Fornax A, NGC 1316 is located roughly 60 million light years away in the southern constellation Fornax. It is a member of a cluster of galaxies associated with the constellation, appropriately called the Fornax cluster.
Researchers believe that NGC 1316 is the product of galactic merger(s) that have been going on for the past 3 billion years. It is also a radio galaxy, and at 1400MHz is the fourth-brightest object in the sky. I'll post a radio image of Fornax A from an earlier APOD in a separate comment.
