Good afternoon, Rallypoint, and welcome to the May 16th Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD): "Milky Way over French Alp Hoodoos." What's a hoodoo? Also known as a tent rock, a hoodoo is usually found in both sedimentary and volcanic rock formations. It consists of a softer rock that is capped by a more erosion-resistant rock. The results can be as high as a 10-story building.
These hoodoos are found in the in the Hautes-Alpes region of France on the road between Pontis and Le Sauze-du-Lac. This composite photo was produced by two exposures: one taken at twilight and a second taken later in the evening.
