Over 22 Million poultry (chickens, turkeys, ducks) raised in agriculture plus wild birds (including raptors) have died or been culled. The single reported human case was a poultry farm worker (which is not atypical for those in close contact with the critters secretions). Large outbreaks in other countries, and in 1918 in the US are because influenza virus can be transmitter between species (including swine) but appropriate sanitation measures on farms, and between farming operations can slow it down. Transmission in wild bird populations along fly-ways is less easily measured & controlled.
