A short war would have had a different result.

Another great article. Chickamauga battlefield is the best preserved civil war battlefield. There was a reunion 20 years after the battle. Both sides sat and talked about the battle then they walked the battlefield. The historical markers are like micro bits of the battle. The sign will say that john smith and harry dunes were right here when just 200 yards away they spotted three union soldiers bill harris, paul malone and william Tuttle and a shootout occurred. And 200 yards over is a marking talking about the 3 union troops when they spotted the 2 confederates. 1986 while at Fort Gordan after signal officer advanced course had a follow on course for four weeks on division and corps operations. We did a terrain walk at chickamauga battlefield. Ended up in a dried creek bed and located two Confederate belt buckles and 7 mini balls. Turned them over to park rangers. Against federal law to removed them from the park. That was where a company of infantry and a battery of 4 guns held up longstreets corp for several hours. The battery was firing triple grape shot canisters. Reports stated at the end of the battle you could walk from one side of the creek to the other without dipping down as the dead that had fallen in the gully was so deep you were walking from one bank to the next bank on the dead. Thanks for the great share MAJ Dale E. Wilson, Ph.D.

Sounds like what Ike said about walking on the bodies in the Falaise Pocket.
