Good afternoon, Rallypoint, and welcome to the April 6th Hump Day Two-fer Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD). The first image is from yesterday (April 5th): "Seven Sisters versus California." The Seven Sisters (on right, 400 light years away) are The Pleiades, also known as Messier 45. The California Nebula (on left, 1,500 light years away) is an emission nebula comprised of ionized hydrogen gas. The Pleiades are near the constellation Taurus, and the California Nebula is in the constellation Perseus. If you mouse over this image on the APOD web site, you will see two other features highlighted: a star-forming region named IC 348 and the Baby Eagle Nebula.
