My Great Uncle was in the Russian Army. They lived in Belarus and he was drafted. My Grandfather didn't want to serve in the Russian Army so he stowed away on a ship and came to the US. My anathema for the Russian Army comes from my Grandpa even before this mess

I read an article years ago about life in the Russian military. It wasn’t pretty. Recruits were abused, anything of value stolen etc. A fellow I meet who had talked to Russians soldiers repeated similar stories. West Germany had to pay for moving Russian troops from East Germany back to Russia. I believe West Germany actually built barracks for them in Russia. For years there was talk about “ the vertical stroke”. In a screw up the authorities started punishment at the lowest level of command, the grunt, and went several layers up. How high up depended on the level of screw up. So the Russian army always functioned on concealment of problems. I don’t know if that is true today but it seems to be.
