Great share, Lt Col Charlie Brown - No matter how one slices the cake, so-to-speak, air refueling is not as simple as it would seem from the videos I have watched on the subject... A new robotic system seems like the way to go, but this system will have to be more precise than that of a human, guiding the air refueling boom to the receiving plane... or other craft able to be refueled in the air...

I'd be concerned that lack of human involvement at the boom's controls would be potentially catastrophic, say, if the decoupling fails.
If an experienced boomer were positioned at the ready, then it would seem somewhat okay, I suppose...

Lots of time behind both those aircraft and never really understood the decision to put the boom operator in a remote location. Too many things that could go wrong where eyeballs directly on the operation could prevent issues IMO. Ya, the receiver can see things too but that nozzle and boom connection usually aren't where the receiver can see them.

That sure make sense and You have the perspective from the receiving end the visibility problem. Seems the boom operator is needed to make up for that. That the first I'd heard a statement from a pilot on the receiving end and thank You for an insight I'd never thought of but then I also don't have any experience in that are at all. I thank You for Your input on that subject.

I had the privilege to work on some of the cyber aspects of the KC-46 and I can say what we have planned for it and our new aircraft (possibly even the old) is going to be really cool.
