Coast Guard authorities say 18 people were rescued from an ice floe that broke away in Lake Erie over the weekend. Officials said a helicopter from Air Station Detroit noticed a group of people on the floe near Ohio's Catawba Island at about 1 p.m. Sunday with several all-terrain vehicles seeking a route back to land.
Last week, crews from the two Coast Guard stations were also called in to aid Catawba Island volunteer firefighters in rescuing seven people from another floe west of the peninsula jutting out into the Great Lake.

Once again the US Coast Guard springs into action and saves many lives. My salute to these hero's !

It really wasn't too smart to venture out on Lake Erie on ATVs! If that ice flow started breaking up those ATVs and their passengers would have been in deep do do on a Lake that may seem like an ocean! Thank the Lord for the Service of the United States Coast Guard!!!

Most of us think of the Coast Guard as limiting their work to the Atlantic, Pacific and Gulf Coasts, but they also have plenty to keep them busy along our northern Great Lakes and even along the frozen coasts of Alaska. I’m shivering just thinking about that duty!
