Basically we're back to follow the money, that's just sad concerning health care.

Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen
Why is that? The American version of health care is all about making money, not necessarily health care.

So, data collection, as discussed very very superficially by the author (and not elaborated upon by Musk, at all), is more complex and nuanced than some journalists & pundits are conveying. There are over 2400 county coroner/ME offices in the US. The work is generally at that level, then consolidated at state level, then shared with CDC. There is a standardized format in use in the US, but actual policies & procedures may vary, and were almost certainly subject to the influence of a pandemic (staffing, delays, can't really "work from home"). Most often it's the funeral home/crematory staff completing many portions of the form, with the medical folks completing portions--again subject to the information on hand (e.g. toxicology studies can take weeks) and by design there's information on primary or proximate cause of death and certainly an opportunity to list some or all known co-morbidities. Some states allow these to be public records, while others limit access to only those with a legitimate need to obtain (e.g. family member or other executor for the estate). Nothing is easily discerned in real time "analysis" and you might be muddling along with your co-morbidities (advanced age) and COVID or influenza or a bacterial infection or other virus puts you over the edge. It's rather easy for us to sit at our keyboards and think it should be "immediate gratification" with teams of data.
