Like many media outlets with more than a slight political leaning, they are in the business of delivering the message that their audience wants to hear. That message is delivered even if individuals in the organization privately think otherwise.

Because they were largely NOT a threat. No one goes to an insurrection unarmed. A 67 year olf grandmother, who goes through the metal detector and is greeted by the guards and welcomed in is not a threat.
Who is a threat? The officer who shot an unarmed Air Force veteran and remains unaccounted for.

SFC Thomas Foreman so they say but that didn't go to court so we don't know really, do we? And apparently that officer has had his share of issues with weapons but again, we never got to question it.

Lt Col Charlie Brown police investigate things and present evidence. Prosecutors decide whether or not that evidence warrants going to court. In this case, there was both an internal and external examination of said evidence and the decision was made to not go to court. Cue “Law & Order” theme music.
