Supply will go down and demand will go up...economics 101...let's control supply so we can keep everyone dependent on the government!!!

Cpl Vic Burk - That sounds like a good plan. Wish a lot more folks would consider becoming more self-sufficient about food. It's healthier too - and the work of it is great exercise.
A friend and I were talking recently, about that. One drawback of concern for urban and suburban folks with population density and heavy traffic, is that soil is often polluted with toxicity from the air. So even though creative container gardening is possible, toxicity in the soil that settles in from air pollution, is a concern - even when produce is grown organically.
In reality, we have no idea about the soil when we purchase produce! Buying local is a great idea, but when industry has made the soil toxic and a lot of the area produce is grown in unremediated soil, then it is a huge problem. That's how it is in Tacoma WA, and it is probably not unique to Tacoma. There is a superfund site that created toxicity for over a 30 mile radius, which includes some of the best agricultural land between Tacoma and Seattle, and there is the toxicity too from the old pulp mill toxicity from a few decades back.

SGT Mary G. - You have a lot of good points most of which are out of our control. Our property was used to grow tobacco on before we purchased it. There were barely any earthworms in the soil the first couple years that we found but as time went on they were able to make a comeback. I am guessing the chemicals they sprayed on the tobacco killed most of them as it leached into the soil.

Earthworms and beneficial insects, birds too, seem to be good indicators of healthier environments (for people and produce).
