Congregations affiliated with the United Methodist Church have agreed to contribute $30 million to a fund for victims who say they were molested as youngsters in the Boy Scouts of America, an attorney said Tuesday.
A committee representing United Methodist churches that sponsored Scouting activities also agreed to help raise an additional $100 million for the fund.
Jessica Lauria, an attorney for the BSA, told Judge Laurie Selber Silverstein about the planned agreement during an online hearing Tuesday in federal bankruptcy court in Delaware. Lauria said the United Methodist-affiliated churches would receive protected party status, which means they would be released from further liability for abuse claims.

I have really mixed feelings about this. I was in Boy Scouts for several years and never heard of anything abusive. My experience was very positive.

I volunteered as Assistant Cubmaster/Scoutmaster as my boys were growing up. Heard of the rare story of someone having abused a child somewhere else, but they were dealt by their local law enforcement agencies. Not a one in the Norwela Council that I knew of. Almost all the volunteers in our Troop/Pack were military guys there for their kids and to help any others that would join.

Nice that others have stepped up to help; I suspect that it is more than just one group of affiliated church leaders responsible.

I am thankful for the people who are helping, but angry to be in a society where men claim to be the pillars of society for a cover to be a predator.
