"Supply chains: companies shift from ‘just in time’ to ‘just in case’" It says subscribe, the article came up in my browser window just fine, I don't know.
The article is describing how supply chains are changing back to before the rise of "just in time" and the proliferation of LLCs. LLCs and "Just in time"were implemented to reduce the companies tax burden by reducing "on hand" stock and components. As the article states as long as the supply worked nobody thought to much about it. Too use a vehicle assembly plant as an example, there are 3 within an hours drive of my residence, If a "Just in Time"
delivery truck was late with it's load, the entire production line would shut down and employees would be standing around doing nothing. As a plant maintenance guy it affected my ability to do my job, in that the need to reduce on hand inventory meant that there might be a part used on 40 different machines but only 2 were kept on hand. Many times we had to choose which machine was going to be left idle as we robbed "Peter to pay Paul" or we made modifications, a grey area on the safety side, to get machines running again. Where was I going with this? When the "Bean" counters got control of the process American productivity suffered.
