Cost are soo high that journalist can no longer afford to take math classes

People need to seriously consider trade schools. Better pay out the gate and pretty much almost always in demand. Not every electrician invests with a stock broker, pretty much guaranteed though that a stock broker will hire an electrician to rewire their kitchen remodel. Not every plumber banks online, but that bank still gets clogged toilets. Not every construction worker uses computers, but the average IT person can't build their own house add-on.
