Remember being there when it was called Dome Charlie. We were digging a Herc out, putting a new wing and engines on it and it flew out unpressurized on Christmas Day '76. Bob Bellafronto was the Seabee OIC there while I was the Engineering Officer supporting out of McMurdo. There was core work being done back then too, but I don't remember the depths. As the air is much thinner around the poles, the altitude at DC made it several thousand higher equivalent. The first thing anyone does is spend time acclimating to it.
