Ok. I read the comments. I take it that none of them realize that the newest, did I say newest, Ticonderoga Cruiser is 27 years old. The oldest one in service was commissioned in 86. I'd rather see new cruisers than that stupid Ford.

I know I sometimes come across as one of those "never trust the g'mnt" types - because I am. But we are reaping what we sowed. IMHO, we have "smart shipped" our crews and outsourced maintenance to a point that we no longer have the needed skill sets or the sheer numbers of sailors to maintain our Navy. We have only one (1) tender in commission vs a couple of dozen in the 80's. Identify the choke points on the globe. Subic is gone. Kaohsiung & Keelung are gone. Singapore is a yard scramble. Lumut is too small. Sydney, Melbourne & Fremantle are too far south. Holy Lock gone. Rota, Gaeta, La Madd, Naples, Augusta Bay are port calls. Ships look big and bad, but they take more maintenance than an English sports car.

Early 90s we scrambled for enough platforms for a full up ARG. It makes it tough to load plan with two ship mixes (3 or 4 ship ARG?) right up to near deployment. Throw a FMF LANT GO in the mix, that wants tanks, and it becomes a Rubik's Cube. It makes a huge difference for op planners and embarkers. The LSTs were eventually sold to Chile. Our first pump was on LKA 117 El Paso (her last cruise), and we wet-netted pax to shore on Mike Boats and LCUs. Heavy 100 ton crane ops getting gear to shore. Well deck ops and LCACs were a bonus, but the old way worked too. Amphibs are mostly new now. In-theater depot is a different story.

CWO3 (Join to see) Nice, another 'gator! 1992, ARG Bravo. New Orleans, Juneau, Rushmore. Out of Singapore/Lumut north through the straits, south to Diego Garcia for a load adjustment and bring on a Seal team, in to Mogadishu in time for CNN camera lights to endanger 1st wave. Disarmed the technicals and locked them down in their compounds, then hunkered down to wait to turn it over to the UN who promptly screwed it up. Good times! If you want libs, go phibs.
All gone. Rushmore due to go in '22.

CWO4 Terrence Clark - Same era, just different theater. Saratoga and TR BATGRUs. Seals were with us on the Trenton on second float, along with the USMC Boat Company and Force Recon Det, forming the Direct Action Platoon.
