Prior to the introduction of the P-51s the German fighters tactics were charged to attack the bombers when our escort fighters had to turn around. The P-51 with her ability to escort bombers all the way to the targets and back facilitated the US attaining air superiority by shooting down attacking German fighters against large US bomber formations. This was the start to the end of the Luftwaffe. Often the P-51 pilots were told to use their weapons to attack ground targets before returning to bases. They also focused on German airfields to destroy planes on the ground.
I have seen video interviews of P-51 pilots. They described the plane as a thoroughbred horse, and I could see they were in reverie as they talked about that fighter. They loved that plane.
I hope that this information is pertinent because I was told that my posts are vapid. lol
