LTC (Join to see) - Terrible as the price was, this effectively ended any doubt about who would be leading going forward. The Allies were enjoying success after success with US led operations, both through France and up from Italy, Montgomery was the absolute worst type of leader. He cared more for how things appeared, then how things should be done. 4 bridges, linked by a single lane road, with both Aircraft recon photos and Dutch resistance telling them that an armor unit was present.
There is Bold and decisive risk taking, and then there is stupidity. Monty refused to see reason, or listen to caution. It was Glory he wanted.
The annals of history perhaps presents the absolute most scathing rebuke of Montgomery and his Character. DeGaul became President of France, Eisenhower became President of the United States, Montgomery basically drops off the pages of history following this debacle.

LTC (Join to see) - One other thing I am somewhat grateful for - Both the Book and the Film make sure this failed operation doesn't get swept aside and buried in time, that Stupid decisions and risks undertaken were not limited to just the "Bad Guys"

TRUE----Take Desert Storm for instance. Instead of tanks moving ahead as fast as they could, they were reduced to moving along at the pace of a man walking. Were they outrunning their supplies? Or was it a career man who would risk our lives to protect his career? If it was outrunning supplies, take a lesson from the 69th Armor in Vietnam. Helicopters delivered 1000 gallon blatters of fuel, and a tank track pushed on it to force it out, down a hose to the fuel tanks. Likewise, food, water, and ammo were delivered and the wounded extracted. Don rely on a long ground tail that can and will be ambushed.
