I am not proud to be an American as much as I am thankful to have been born in America. Also, I am certain that, had I been born elsewhere, I would have sacrificed all to get here and become an American. However, that being said, I am not proud of Americans who are surrendering their freedom (and risking mine) simply to be free of responsibility for themselves.

SGT (Join to see) As a Political Science major, I have to say that was a great article. The way I explain the difference between patriotism and nationalism to people I meet is this: Patriotism is the love of your country and respect for other countries. Nationalism is love of your country to the exclusion of all others. There is nothing wrong with Patriotism, unless you are the modern day left.

MSG Stan Hutchison - The US is not a Democracy, never has been. It's a Constitutional Republic, based on Democratic Principals. That's why Congress has to have greater than just a majority to make some things happen.

SGT (Join to see) - But in most cases, Congress does NOT have to have more than a majority. That is simply part of the established rules set by each House, which they can change, as the GOP did for conferring Supreme Court seats.
And, yes, we have a Constitutional Republic, which is set on democracy standards; the elected are chosen by the people, one person, one vote.
Not all Democracies are Republics, but, technically, all Republics are democracies.
I don't know why we have to continue to have this argument. Everyone knows what we are talking about when we use the word democracy.

MSG Stan Hutchison - Except it's not "..one person, one vote." at the Federal level. Electors choose the Executive Branch. Which has caused problems on both sides of aisle in recent History. Not everyone defines Democracy the same way, no matter the wishes of the Socialists.

1a: government by the people
especially : rule of the majority
b: a government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation usually involving periodically held free elections
However, it is not worth a long involved argument so in the future on any of your posts, I will attempt to only use "Constitutional Republic."
