De Gaulle only withdrew the French military forces from NATO. The government participated in certain aspects.
He always felt that the US and UK slighted him during and after WW II.

Slighted Him ? by saving His country when He couldn't do it Himself ? Talk about an ungrateful waste product.

They lost a lot of good people in the First World War. The good ones remaining were vastly outnumbered as time went by.

The French did feel slighted after the war but in most part it was due to their economy! Hard to be a world leader when a big chunk of your economy and country have been destroyed!
