It would have helped if they had used the same aircraft that they had trained with. The helicopters used during the operation were not prepped for use in the sand and dust environment they were exposed to. Reports also indicated that the aircraft had not been maintained to standard.
Overall, poor planning and execution.
Carter did not do the military any favors while he was in office. Our NATO allies had no faith in him.

Carter was Navy, and he dropped out of their Nuke school in spite of the stories that he was an engineer.

Same here. The operation was a disaster but lessons were learned.

Bad situation. This effectively ended Carter's presidency but I did, and do, admire him taking the full responsibility for the disaster. I know the stated reason for the event was the US giving aid to the Shah but I think that was just an excuse for the radical Muslim clergy to push for cleaning out what they saw as the "Great Satan" of the United States.
