On April 23, 1348, the Order of the Garter was founded by English King Edward III. It is Britain's highest civic or military honor. "Honi soit qui mal y pense (Shame on him who thinks evil of it) is the Orders's motto. That is also the last line of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.
