Served my first tour at MCAS(H) Tustin, CA. Worked at H&MS-16 (MALS-16 now?) in Hangar 3, which was a smaller, IMA level maintenance hangar for the squadrons which used the 2 Airship Hangars for OMA maintenance. The squadrons had the rest of their birds parked outside on the surrounding aprons. The Goodyear Blimp used to make periodic visits and would shelter inside for maintenance.
Was attached to HMM-161, located in Hangar 1. When HMM-161 deployed overseas to MCAS Futenma [in Okinawa] on unit rotation, I would relocate and work out of Hangar 1 until the squadron deployed and then resume IMA level maintenance with H&MS-36 (MALS-36 now?).
The very first CH-53E squadron (HMH-465) was stood up in Hangar 2. In 2013, Hangar 2 had a roof cave in and two towers were erected on each side with cables supporting to prevent further roof collapse. It looks like after years of neglect these structures are about to come down. Sad to see them go.

Capt Jeff S. In 2015, the Boy Scouts were able to conduct short tours of one hanger. (See photos.). The land surrounding ‘Lighter Than Air Station’, aka ‘LTA’, Santa Ana is rapidly being gobbled up by developers for commercial and residential use. Several few Non-Government Organizations / Charitable Organizations have also located on the North side along Red Hill Ave.
