Any weapon is better than no weapon, especially if you are well trained in its use and upkeep.
My favorite show as a kid was "The Rifleman" and he was pretty darn good with that lever action Winchester !!!

I have long questioned logic behind the "sound of the action " logic.
I want to have one in the chamber and be ready- not putting one in battery.
Which leads nicely into the weakness on a lever action. The ability to chamber smoothly (especially while in the prone or behind cover) is why many manufacturers made the shift to a pump action.
No one can dispute the romance of the lever action. And in recent years some have become quite accurate rifles.... and if that is what you have when shtf, use it.
But a bolt (rifle, no one likes a bolt shotgun) or a pump are superior for bringing a follow-up shot(s) to bare.
But I love those levers in all non-defensive situations too.
