Just finished going through Sherman's autobiography again. The confusion over Sherman's acceptance of Johnston's surrender, that included the other Confederate forces, stemmed from this meeting. Sherman was proceeding on the instructions Lincoln gave verbally at this meeting. Lincoln had change some of those particulars when Grant was cornering Lee's army, and had telegraphed him. That wire was never forwarded to Sherman, and after Lincoln was gone, Sherman's dealings with Johnston were spun as wrong and even treasonous for political reasons by Sec. of War Stanton, who hoped to run for president someday.
