The Tuskegee Airmen contributed significant capabilities in Europe. The advent of the P-51 and skill of the pilots ushered in a new era which would eventually lead to air dominance over the Germans.
I have seen videos of Tuskegee Airmen describe flying in the P-51s and they fell into great reverie. They loved that plane and it entered their hearts. Flying them was a spiritual moment. I have a poor memory, but I won't forget that.
- They were able to escort strategic bombers all the way to their targets and back.
- The were instrumental in destruction of the Luftwaffe. Often German fighters would attack our strategic bombers when the escort fighters had to turn around due to the lack of range. P-51 fighters had the range to defend the bombers and attack and destroy German fighters that threatened bombers.
- P-51 pilots were used on tactical runs which destroyed thousands of planes on the ground and engaged German units on the ground.
