The new Marine Commandant just threw out the tanks to make them light so they will have to have Army 19 Series Soldiers come there instead. The change occurred 3 months ago.

Yup the Marines no longer have the M1 tank or if they still do they are getting rid of all remaining Tank units. They do not believe tank units fit with their doctrine any longer.

I believe the Nazis built them. There were some old gun positions nearby when we were there for Baltic Challenge 97. We broke out gear and got it to Estonia, and returned it after the Operation. It's like new, some we uncrated. They also exercised MPF with offload and maintenance. There was enough for a Brigade stored in caves. Was called NALMEB then. Managed by MCLB Albany.

You are correct on the Nazis. Used these caves a few times about a decade ago supporting our MAGTF in Romania. They are massive. They support much more now than the Scandinavian mission. It is managed by Blount Island Command in FL these days in cooperation with HQMC LPO. I think Norway picks up half the cost.

Maj Timothy Robertson - Maybe Blount managed then. My partner was a USMC retired LDO Capt out of Ordnance. He lived in Albany and I assumed the rest. His team were from Blount and Albany. It was a good op. The OPP loaded at Plymouth I believe. We loaded most gear on a ship in a fjord. HQ also wanted to test rail movement through Sweden and barge across Baltic. They passed through Hell (SE) enroute, no T-shirts though. Not sure if "Monty" is still around, but he was a great guy. Our Norwegian Capt. and the USMC Major from NATO in Trondheim made our job easier. Hard to adjust to daylight almost all night.

Blount Island falls under Albany. The Norwegian team was great but very expensive even with per diem up there. Seems I was always up there in the colder months.CWO3 (Join to see)

Maj Timothy Robertson - It was summer for us. The CG at Vaernes declared a day off due to rare sunshine one day. They put us up in BOQ and took great care of us. Buses to caves daily. Comfort Inn in Trondheim before barge to Vaernes. NATO added two new Volvo wagons for additional transportation, with toll bricks, and international cell phones. Travel missed window on AMC so we flew 38 man Det. Business Class across the pond. My last op, and not the norm for sure. Not much libo, but plenty of Montecristos and Cohibas. A decent piano bar (Frakken) in Trondheim. Very expensive there as you say.
