What a botched area in our history- not saying we should not have done this, but allowing USSR to move next door had to have made our leadership cringe.

everyone was nervous when this was going on. We were playing war games hiding under desks at school. Was probably the closest we ever came to nuclear war with the USSR.

LT COL Charlie Brown:
UNITED STATES severs diplomatic relations with Cuba.
A very good decision decision carried out by President Dwight D. Eisenhower .
Just before I shipped out to Vietnam, several of the Airman in my group were called into a room
to hear a speech by our Commander which these exerts were the main context.
Gentlemen we would not have you Ignorant as to why you are going to Vietnam !
It is to push back on Communism presently pushing into South Vietnam from the North,
coming from Communist China. Communism is also a threat to the U.S. from Russia ( with recent threats )
that they would bury us ! Communism closest to us is Cuba, with support from Russia
With big guns aimed at the U.S., President Kennedy Stopped that one.

Lt Col Charlie Brown even then the threat of Communism being so close to our borders was worth extreme measures.
