US set to approve handing sacred Native American land to mining corporations

The Trump administration is set to hurriedly approve the handing over of sacred Native American land in Arizona to a pair of giant Anglo-Australian mining corporations.
The move, expected before the end of the year and months ahead of schedule, would grant Rio Tinto and BHP more than 2,400 acres to build a copper mine that would destroy religious and cultural sites sacred to the San Carlos Apache tribe.
Critics and tribal leaders claim the project’s environmental review process is being fast-tracked in order to push it through before Joe Biden takes office in January.
The US government and Resolution Copper, the joint venture owned by Rio Tinto and BHP, denied those charges, with the US Forest Service insisting the review process was simply concluding faster than expected.

Can't blame this all on Trump, it's been the GOP agenda since their 2016 platform, if not earlier.

Lt Col John (Jack) Christensen: This particular land grab has been tied up in courts and environmental studies for a few years. I've been following it for quite a while. The environmental damages are going to be pretty huge compared to the actual number of jobs and copper which might be extracted. The fact that it is also desecrating sacred lands is just another slap in the face to the tribal nations. And the claims that the process was coming closer to an end doesn't make any sense, other than "we want the land now and Trump can get it for us before he leaves office". Meh.

Patricia Overmeyer ya, like with judges, Trump is the figurehead, or stooge depending on your point of view, that has enabled the GOP to get its way.

Land grab all over for resources. I hate to see our Native Americans screwed over though. Some have capitalized with casinos, but that's a pittance.
