Hitler identified several "enemies" to the German population and vowed to "do something about them." That enemy included humans but also mainstream institutions such as the media plus politicians. He gave those dissatisfied a banner to rally around, so they ignored the evil.
Goebbels showed the "big lie" worked and Hitler became a master at it. During my tour in Germany, I heard a lot of excuses about that time. One German policeman I knew that was there back then told me " We were so angry, so hurt we almost begged Hitler to come and rescue us. We bought all of his lies. We were not only naïve, we were stupid!"
