MY COMMENT:
The Mauritanian, starring Jodie Foster and Benedict Cumberbatch, claims in it's trailer that it is a "true story." Yet, nothing could be further from the truth. From made-up interactions between sensory deprived detainees and military working dogs and Military Police, to false statements about trials and innocence. The civilian world cannot begin to comprehend the legality and appropriateness of a place like the US military detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The world cannot hope to know the real Gitmo story from works of fiction such as this film, despite its high-powered cast and makers. The subject, Mohamedou Slahi, is a known al Qaeda operative who swore bayat (oath of allegiance) to Usamma bin Laden, received basic militant training in camps in Afghanistan, and was prepared to be a martyr. Slahi recruited three of the 9/11 terrorists into al Qaeda and facilitated their training. He was a leader of an al Qaeda cell in Germany and Canada, and is responsible for the failed "Millennium bombing" targeting the Los Angeles International Airport and other US targets. Slahi is an electrical engineer whose technical background allowed him to gain extensive knowledge of the communications methods used by al Qaeda. This is the man Foster, Cumberbatch and their colleagues want you to sympathize with. 731 unlawful combatant detainees have been RELEASED from Gitmo, and not ONE has been executed, beheaded, blown up, hacked to death, dragged naked and lifeless through the streets, drowned or burned alive. All things our enemies have done to us and/or our allies. Even lawful combatant POW's may be held without charge or trial "until the end of hostilities" according to the Geneva Conventions. The Global War on Terror rages on. There is no moral comparison between Gitmo and how our enemies treat their captives. Detainees are treated with dignity and respect at Gitmo, where receive FREE Quran's, prayer rugs & beads, halal and special Muslim holy holiday meals including lamb and bakalava, directions to Mecca on guard towers and cell floors, services of US military Muslim chaplains, world class health, dental and vision care, recreation, library, DVD's, video games, correspondence, sports and more. From the trailer alone I know that this movie is propaganda. I have exchanged Twitter DM's and books with Slahi, and he refuses to discuss his connections to al Qaeda or how an innocent Mauritanian man ended up being captured on the battlefield in Afghanistan. DO NOT watch this deceptive film. Sincerely, MAJ (RET) Montgomery J. Granger, former ranking US Army Medical Department officer with the Joint Detainee Operations Group, Joint Task Force 160.
