Agree. Maintaining high standards remains a challenge for the DOD even today.

We had a couple of them when I went thru BCT and AIT, everyone helped them get thru both the best we could without catching hell from the D I'S MAJ Dale E. Wilson, Ph.D.

Yes we had a couple that had trouble reading in Boot also, we would read the material to them and then they would remember it, great memory's and minds, just NO schooling. We did have a guy that did not wear shoes during the summer months, from the hills somewhere, do not remember which ones. SGT David A. 'Cowboy' Groth

This was the worst program that was ever started, one of the reasons that I was so happy when they started the all volunteer service and stopped the draft, they upped the requirements for service entrance.

A good portion of these people didn't have the capacity to succeed and many washed out before even getting as far a Vietnam. Many proved to be completely useless. I suppose McNamara saw them as not worth much and just bodies to dispose of and not waste those of normal intelligence. In My opinion McNamara was a complete Rat !

I just want to add that 5,478 of those so called Morons were Killed in battle and another 20, 270 were WIA. Cruelty comes in many ways and forms, Officers from the DOD were opposed and stated they were not in the business of dealing with morons! In essence, they were used literally as pawns but to me those that died in battle were really heroes in my book! May they all R.I.P.

GySgt Thomas Vick - I sure could have said a lot more about Him, I tend to think what I may have said might match Your opinion pretty well. I've said worse elsewhere. I saw some of the abuse using civilian contractors where Military Engineers, Seabee and Air Force Red Horse units could have done the work and not cost anywhere as much. Just pouring number of people into wat then NOT supporting them and micro managing from Washington instead of letting General's and Admirals make battlefield decisions that might speed up end things just to continue making money and caring less about who died, enemy, civilians or Your own troops. Once Johnson and McNamara were in charge this is what We got !

Your absolutely right SMSgt McCarter, and for me it's extremely hard to keep my mouth in check when it comes to Johnson, and McNamara, especially McNamara.
