I first arrived at Hood in late Sep 71 after Vietnam. I was there twice Sep 71 - Nov 74 & Jan 76 - May 80.
It was in chaos even then. Vietnam was winding down and troops had to go somewhere. Hood was pretty well set up for about 20K troops, not the 45K, plus their families by end of 1974. Killeen was outside the East Gate, Copperas Cove out the West. Neither was GI friendly, although their only reason for existence was Ft Hood.
I never wanted to see the place again.
