The Red Eagles were part of America's shadowy foreign materiel exploitation (FME) program, and dedicated towards training. The unit’s existence gave rise to the Tonopah Test Range Airport, which eventually also housed the 4450th Tactical Group’s F-117A Nighthawks, again in total secrecy.

I actually did my ALS speech on the FME focusing on the USAF aspect. That was back in late '97.
Of interest, if you've visited and never known about it, is the Warrior Training Center (don't believe the name has changed since my last visit a few years back) on Nellis AFB. Hopefully still open to all base visitors. Lots of foreign military gear including a Russian Mig, painted up nice, sitting in the middle of the building. I used to love walking through while stationed there and the kids were always in awe. If you ever visit Las Vegas, hit up the base and the Warrior Training Center.
