The Civil was punctuated by the ability of rifles and cannons to shoot further than attacking armies can maneuver safely. The philosophy of going on the offense was using tight formations in the hope there would be enough attackers at critical points of attack to defeat the enemy. This played into the hands of the defenders as they massed fires upon enemy formations.

This military problem was replicated in WWI. After WWI Germany conducted an AAR of WWI. What was planned? Offensive maneuvers. What happened? They got slaughtered. How do we shrink the delta? Blitzkrieg.

I've actually fired one. When in college at Virginia Tech I was in the squadron that was responsible for caring for and firing our cannon that is called Skipper. It's a reproduction, but a 100% accurate one.
