"Indeed this spire symbolized the one and only reason for the Church’s existence: to lead us to God, to point us toward Him."
There is a difference between the Catholic Church and Christianity of the Apostles. The above quote gives stark contrast to that reality.
The Church exists to give G-d glory. Full stop.
I realize Cardinal Sarah reads as a well meaning concerned man. But man's traditions within the Catholic Church, brought in by evil men, mislead the masses. Most people going to mass in the Catholic Church do not realize this. It is the Catholic Church ideology I write about here.
I suspect CPO Ponce, you too are well meaning and a concerned individual. So, the following is a quick glimpse of the reality of our world. IMO.
The Pope is not G-d's man on earth. Christ did not turn water into his blood at Passover. Nor, is the water and bread turned into blood and flesh during communion within the Church. Mary is not Co-Regent with Christ in Heaven and works have nothing to do with salvation. We also do not tell the truth about Islam. But, I will write about that some other time.
We have thrown away the moral law. Now, we reap the whirlwind of disrespect for authority at the local, State and Federal level. Just as ancient Israel did when they made their children walk through the fire and bake cakes to the Queen of Heaven.
True Christianity is real simple. All those who believe in G-d the Father, the Word made flesh and the Holy Spirit who asked for forgiveness of sins are Priests for Christ. The blood of Christ and his risen body is our sacrifice for sin. We do good works to show our desire to be like Christ only.
Please forgive my post if it upsets you CPO. The Catholic Church has more blood on it's hands than Muhammad and it has more paganism within it's ideology too.

First, let me start by saying there is no forgiveness needed as your post did not upset me. Peace be with you. Second, I like to preface what I'm about to say with a full disclosure statement: I am not a theologian nor a historian and my thoughts are fully my own.
I believe in your opening statement in retort to Cardinal Sarah, you misinterpreted his point. You are correct in stating "The Church exists to give God glory. Full stop." This is the same point Cardinal Sarah was making using the spire of Notre Dame as symbolism for the reason the Church exists - to "point us to God" so that we may worship Him.
Any faithful Catholic who is unable to understand the difference between the Traditions of the Church and church traditions have allowed themselves to be misled by men and I am fully aware of the many that have been led astray. This is caused by their own laziness and lack of faith in Truth.
You are entitled to your opinions but rest assured the Pope is the Vicar of Christ (the successor to St. Peter who Jesus Christ made the rock upon which His Church is to be built). I would also want to make very clear that the Pope is a man, who is a sinner, who will make and has made mistakes, and makes no claims to be Jesus but only His earthly representative through the Holy Spirit.
As for you interpretation of the Holy Eucharist, I encourage you to read John 6 or as Catholics call it "The Bread of Life Discourse". God gave you a beautiful and wonderful free gift - free will and with that gift, you are able to interpret this Scripture as you see fit. I, as a devout and faithful Catholic know that at the epiclesis of the Holy Mass, the bread and wine and transubstantiated into the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of our Lord Jesus Christ. I believe this and know this to be true regardless of whether or not you do.
As for the Blessed Virgin Mary, she is the Mother of God and any Christian who doesn't believe or accept that should read the Holy Bible. There is nothing I can say about her and the gift Jesus gave to us at Calvary that will change your mind about her importance. My only retort I can offer is this: imagine if you were God and could create your own mother. Would you make her perfect as you are perfect? Would you create the very vessel that will carry you free from original sin? Would she be beautiful? Upon her death or final moments on earth, would you assume her into your presence for all eternity (body and soul)? I can't answer these questions for you but I surely can answer them for myself and I say YES to all of them and more. If I were God, woman I chose to be the very vessel that would bring me into this world would be unequivocally perfect in every conceivable way. To say otherwise puts our human limits on God who is limitless.
As for your last statement, I can't deny the death and destruction that have been caused throughout history using the name of the Catholic Church but know this: it was done by weak men under the banner of the Catholic Church. The Church remains the announcer of Truth. It's the weak and sinful men within that pervert that Truth and only those of us whom are willing to beg God for forgiveness for our weakness and sinful nature through the Rite of Reconciliation and the Power of the Holy Spirit can we remain steadfast in faith and in the Light of Truth.

'In comments likely to enhance his progressive reputation, Pope Francis has written a long, open letter to the founder of La Repubblica newspaper, Eugenio Scalfari, stating that non-believers would be forgiven by God if they followed their consciences."
This world system loves it's own. But, the true truth is accepting the word made flesh as our sin offering.
Peter was not the first Pope. Peter believed Christ was the son of G-d. This is the rock on which the Church was built. Plus, Peter died a few hundred years before the Roman Empire made parts of Christianity the State religion. Then, added from there.
Mary was fully human and had other children after Jesus. She is honored for being the human G-d choose to being himself into this sinful world. But Mary is as dead as my Grandmother who will rise at the second coming of Christ.
Jesus was murdered once for human sin. Not several times a day for communion.
We stand apart.
