City of San Antonio illegally auctioned off more than 200 troops’ vehicles, DOJ alleges

There is a free DOD database to check if someone is on active duty or not, at https://scra.dmdc.osd.mil/scra/#/login Lawyers use it all the time to prove to the court whether someone is a military member or not.

The article says:

"The city owns the vehicle storage facility, but the facility’s vehicle storage and vehicle auction operations are conducted by a private contractor on behalf of the city, according to the court document. The city was the only named defendant."

That right there is the problem. An unaccountable private company had a profit motive not to give it back and from the lawsuit won't face any consequences so will likely do it again.
