I will say most Vets probably only watched Full Metal Jacket all the way through a few times. However the basic training part most vets have probably watch a dozen times or more. As for saluting in a warzone, in my tours to Iraq and Afghanistan they made us salute.

In the Army in Nam if a newby saluted in the bush, he got his ass chewed. The NVA and VC werent stupid. They could tell the officers from the grunts although we wore the same grungy jungle fatigues. and looked the same. the enemy could tell who the leaders were. At any rate in 1970 in Quang Tri Vietnam we were told not to salute while in the bush and no one wore any rank. Even the medic's put the od green tape over the red crosses on their aid bags otherwise they would have stuck out like a diamond in a goat's ass. Maybe other outfits were different. I don't know.
