I always felt that MPs were under trained to meet civilian standards in what they do on a regular day to day basis. When I was AD MP. I didn't get anything on traffic accident other then make an under educated opinion and hand out 2 forms. Zero in crime scene investigation. Didn't get that until I sent to MPI school. Hell, would have even appreciated getting EVOC at AIT. So the problem is where those that went years ago that are getting out 10-20 yrs later and go into civilian LEA and don't have the same expected knowledge as someone that has gone through an academy. I am sure that much as changed since I was an AD MP.

When I got off AD and moved to Florida. Florida has few academy schools so the program is taught at community colleges. Florida accepted my MP as well just required me to go to the range and some classes in Florida state law in order to get a certification in the state of Florida. As what law enforcement does on a regular basis between investigations traffic accidents crime scene investigation at a patrol level it is not taught in MP school. You are required to specialize.

That is awesome, I always though that basic MPs were under educated in law enforcement skills. It never exposed AIT students to other areas of law enforcement other then call MPI or Traffic or CID because we can handle this. They never get to experience
anything that they may what to go into. I always thought that it should more emulate a civilian Law Enforcement program with military areas of concern our field tasks added into it. Yes it may add a month to meet the complete criteria but people go MP not to do route recons, physical security PWC,.... Also get more certifications (I am sure many have been added already) Just some thoughts. I went to FT McCellan in 96 before it closed and moved.

SFC (Join to see) - I am a State Certified POST Instructor.(While at FLW I was the only one since I got the certification on my own without Army sponsorship.) I was part of the "First Generation" of instructor/writes brought back to FLW (at the same time we were figuring out LEOSA.) We rewrote lesson plans using industry standard language, we dropped army jargon, Made recommendations for the minimum standards on Duty belt, and assisted in creating a 200 question POST equivalent test which MP would be required to pass to graduate. Get instructors and DSs MOPOST certified. I retired in 2016 so I am not sure where those efforts are today.

SSG (Join to see) - that is awesome. I fell better about MPs coming out of school and going into civ LE after ETS or reserves and Guard going into and using that as their Academy training.

SFC (Join to see) - I also tried to take reserve and guard trainees (who were mostly civilian cops) aside during classes and explain differences to them. One example was as a civilian officer if you tell someone to come talk to you they can say "F off" and there is not much you can do. As a MP if I tell someone to come over and talk to me and they say "F off" its Game On!
