In the War of 1812 the US Navy did not have a large budget so they focused on building quality ships that became revolutionary. Some sources cite the hulls of the American ships were 2 feet thick and made of oak. In one encounter a British and American ship maneuvered in point blank range. The British had a lot of confidence until they realized their cannon balls were bouncing off the hull of the American ship. Hence the name Old Ironside. The British ship was wrecked, surrendered, and was boarded.
