The 1968 pandemic was an influenza (flu) virus variant. Although it did kill many worldwide (including 100,000 in the US), infection rate was lower. We have available flu vaccines to combat it.
COVID-19 is a new variant of the coronavirus. The infection rate is higher and death rate continues to climb. We do not have a vaccine yet in order to combat it

People stopped relying on themselves. They want to "feel" safe and feel like government can manage their lives better then they can themselves.
