The US Navy has awarded a contract to Marinette Marine for the design and production of the next generation small surface combatant, the Guided Missile Frigate (FFG(X)).
The contract encompasses detail design and construction (DD&C) of up to ten guided missile frigates, including one base ship and nine optional ships.
The multi-mission FFG(X) will have the capability to conduct air warfare, anti-submarine warfare, surface warfare, electronic warfare and information operations.

Hop eat goes better than the LCS project. When I was on shore duty after 2 sea tours, we were asked to give our opinions on what type of new ship the Navy should have. We all said buy/license the plans of one of the European countries's ship, beef it up to meet our standards and weapons. Our thought process was don't re-invent the wheel... Of course, Big Navy went the other way and re-invented the wheel with the LCS, a wheel that frequently lost air, was lumpy, and had a horrible ride !!! Now, some years later, it seems like Big Navy has finally taken that advice years ago...
