Some workers asked the management for PPE. The management offered them a cash bonus instead.

Often at these type of processing plants there are those who are not working here legally. They don't feel they have the right to protest conditions and so things happen that should not.

Peeling back the onion - "The workforce at Smithfield is made up largely of immigrants and refugees from places like Myanmar, Ethiopia, Nepal, Congo and El Salvador. There are 80 different languages spoken in the plant. Estimates of the mean hourly wage range from $14-16 an hour. Those hours are long, the work is gruelling, and standing on a production line often means being less than a foot away from your co-workers on either side."

I am not surprised at all. There was so much confusion in regard to health and medical guidelines. The scientists were saying something, then the politicians would spew their silly opinions about the pandemic. Trump would go on and say COVID would not hit our shores, it would disappear. Then he said take horse pills, and some silly stuff about bleach and UV lights. This is the environment created by our government. This meant standards went out the window, and confusion and apathy was born out of the process. We acted like there was no pandemic plan because it was never used.
Trump and the GOP managed to turn the pandemic into a circus.
