A global pandemic of this scale was inevitable. In recent years, hundreds of health experts have written books, white papers, and op-eds warning of the possibility. Bill Gates has been telling anyone who would listen, including the 18 million viewers of his TED Talk. In 2018, I wrote a story for The Atlantic arguing that America was not ready for the pandemic that would eventually come. In October, the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security war-gamed what might happen if a new coronavirus swept the globe. And then one did. Hypotheticals became reality. “What if?” became “Now what?”

One problem with some of the conclusive statements in this article - the national stockpile was depleted to about 50% in 2009 and never replenished. Who was the President during the majority of the time since then?
Another issue - 20 years ago the US contributed about 90% of the needs of PPE for the nation, now 90% comes from China. This Global Supply Chain and Supply Management system flourished under President Bush and then President Obama, so the question back to them is - What did you do? One thing I do know is that President Obama actually championed this monstrosity, and now we are playing into saying "Now what?"
I won't even go into how many hospital facilities in the state of Kansas alone have closed in that same 20 year period. I would even bet that a number of those facilities still standing empty have even been considered for refurbishment and reopening due to this crisis. Some are/were small but the one was a 127 bed facility that was at one time called the "Little Mayo Clinic of the Midwest."

I notice the press has said nothing about how former President Obama's decisions have left us woefully under equipped for this.
