It is truly amazing how long humanity takes to morally evolve, and not always in the right direction. Even today, utusans ("people who take commands") or katulongs (“helpers”) or kasambahays (“domestics”) continue to be owned in the Philippines. Find a quiet place to read this one -- it'll make the pit of your stomach ache. Oh, and grab a box of tissues.

Lt Col Charlie Brown
A friend of mine was sold in Africa to a family here in the US at age 13. She was sent here and kept prisoner for a year until someone in the neighborhood called CPS and they took her away. She hadn't been to school, couldn't speak English. She was the maid, the cook, the laundress and the nanny for 3 small children.
