They need to look at the weight of ammunition as well. There are technologies out there to do exactly this, if we are willing to look at them.
Ammo is one thing a Soldier will always carry. One of the reason we switched from 7.62 to 5.56 is to be able to carry more ammo in a basic load and thus keep up volume of fire longer.

They are actually doing this. If memory serves me right, the new USMC Ma Deuce ammo is plastic jacketed, and I was just reading an article that they were looking at a new case design that uses a stainless steel base and a thinner brass case crimped and gasketed together. Can't find it right now, but if I am remembering right it's 30% lighter and will accept a slightly higher powder charge.

SGT (Join to see) i made a mistake once of buying sardines and beanies and weinies? Small cans. A ton of them. Oh man I regretted that about 5-10 minutes in to the march
