It really is the honey that does the work; my grandmother's recipe (no alcohol) was strong tea with both honey and lemon juice. Honey for the throat, vitamin C for the immune system

My grandmother (and hence, father) believed a coughing youngster headed for bed needed a little honey mixed with a shot of peppermint schnapps. Helped the cough, put them to sleep. I never did it with my kids, but I remember I and my siblings getting a dose of that. Didn't seem to hurt us.
