Maybe we should have done the same thing for Haiti?

1SG (Join to see) - I thought it might be so.I don't know what to think about that Country. On the other side of the island it is all green and forested...and poor but nice. On the other half...bad Karma.

SGT Kevin Hughes - I found the people warm and friendly, and generous despite their poverty. People would work to help without any sense that they would be paid... it was a pretty stark contrast with Katrina a few months earlier.
I came away pretty impressed, to be honest. But they have been plagued with crappy governance from the beginning.

1SG (Join to see) - I know, I felt the same way. And I made friends in Miami who were from Haiti...but sheesh, centuries of bad government has taken a toll. Tough resilient folks under all those sweet smiles, and joy at being alive.

The Monroe Doctrine was the height of hubris when it was issued, and had the European powers cared what America said could have led to a disastrous war when we were ill prepared for one.
Luckily for us, the Europeans had already taken what they wanted from the Americas and contented themselves with Africa and the Far East.
