I've been wondering about the effectiveness of surveillance systems in cities. It seems that they haven't helped in London which has experienced a rapid rise in violent crime, especially stabbings. It seems that the hype may be useful in selling city leaders on making the investment, but the results aren't supporting them. It's sort of like trying to replace Infantry with exotic technology. Has anything ever proven more effective that a cop on the beat, patrolling on foot, getting to know the turf and the people?

Nothing has. And post people who knew neighborhoods, saw trouble early on

I seldom had the opportunity to patrol on foot because as a County Deputy Sheriff, I had hundreds of square miles to patrol.

CPT Jack Durish - I realize that but I was trying to explain what pretty much keeps Deputy Sheriff’s from doing foot patrol, as I would have liked to have done, at times.
