I actually did learn about him in HS history class...back in the good old days when we had Regents exams.

Me too! The Nuns had us learn about all the Famous Americans. One of my old hobbies was reading Letters written in the 17,18, and 19th Century. Folks like Fredrick Douglas, William DuBouis, Langston Hughes...and Jefferson, Washington, and Ben Franklin- all wrote letters that make our emails and texts pale in comparison. There is a High School named after Crispus Attucks - and sadly, most folks didn't know he was the first man killed in the Revolutionary War. African Americans, Women, and First Nations people were absent from most of our History Classes, but not in my little Catholic School. We had to read famous speeches from just about everyone---and I still love finding out bits and pieces missing of our History.
